PBA: Most Beautiful Eyes Contest
Prevent Blindness America (PBA) announced that the voting period has now begun to determine finalists for the “Most Beautiful Eyes Contest.” The public is invited to go online and vote for their choice of the child with the most beautiful eyes on the PBA Facebook page, from now until Sept. 30, the organization said. Essilor and AOA To Award Grants
Essilor of America has again partnered with the American Optometric Foundation (AOF) to continue the Essilor Optical Technology Grants program, now in its 10th year. The program will award three $20,000 grants to optometry schools for projects intended to elevate the standards and visibility of ophthalmic dispensing to students and patients in the training environment. FedEx Donates $5 Million to Orbis
FedEx and ORBIS International, a leading global organization dedicated to saving sight worldwide, kicked off a North American Good Will Tour in Los Angeles this week with the announcement of a new 5-year, $5.375 million commitment in the form of cash and in-kind contributions from FedEx. FedEx Express will donate an MD-10 cargo aircraft to ORBIS to be the third-generation Flying Eye Hospital. Read more

Study Says Minorities Neglect Eye Health
According to new research supported by Transitions Optical, Inc., two out of three minorities don’t know that their ethnicity could be putting them at higher risk, despite the fact that ethnic minorities are more likely than the general population to develop serious eye—and overall—health issues that can take a toll on their vision. The survey specifies its results for African American, Hispanic and Asian populations, as well as the “general population.” Read more
Davis Vision Signs Charitable Partners
Davis Vision has signed on three new charitable organizations as partners to team up with Davis Vision Sight From America, its international outreach program that donates eyeglass frames to organizations that deliver eyewear and other materials to impoverished communities. As a result, donations of thousands of eyeglass frames will be received four times a year. The new partners include Massachusetts-based VOSH International, Global Health Ministry, based in Pennsylvania and Virginia-based Physicians for Peace, according to an announcement from Davis Vision. Think About Your Eyes Contest
The Think About Your Eyes Campaign will invite consumers to “Make a Spectacle of Yourself” with the launch this week of a new Facebook contest. The contest, part of the campaign’s ongoing efforts to promote eye health awareness, encourages entrants to protect their eyes with proper eyewear that blocks 100 percent of UV rays and to show off their eyewear by submitting a photo. More than 30 million Americans suffer from a serious eye disease, many of which could be avoided through wearing proper UV protective eyewear. Read more
