Vision Council and PBA Support ‘Don’t Fry Day’ For UV Awareness

May is  Ultraviolet Awareness Month, and The Vision Council and Prevent Blindness America (PBA) are joining forces to encourage Americans to protect their eyes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In addition, Vision Monday reports that the two groups are voicing their support for national “Don’t Fry Day.” The Friday before Memorial Day has been designated as Don’t Fry Day by the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention in an effort to help reduce the rising rates of skin cancer nationally. Think About Your Eyes Wins 2011 Bulldog Award For Excellence in Media and PR

Vision Monday reports that The Foundation for Eye Health Awareness has announced that its Think About Your Eyes (TAYE) campaign has been recognized with a 2011 Bulldog Award for Excellence in Media and Public Relations. TAYE received bronze honors in the Best Health, Medicine & Fitness Campaign category for its campaign launch activities in New York and Chicago last summer. Read more

Prevent Blindness Awarded Grant From Allergan Foundation

Vision Monday reports that Prevent Blindness America (PBA) announced that it is the recipient of a grant from the Allergan Foundation, funding ongoing efforts of the “Prevent Blindness America Diabetic Eye Disease Educator Program,” which it launched with support from the Allergan Foundation in 2010. PBA added that funding for the second phase of the program will maximize the program’s outreach by developing a Spanish language version of the online program.

Americans Not Properly Protecting Their Vision

According to an article at Vision Monday, an overwhelming 82 percent of Americans fear losing their vision more than any other of the five senses. The report shows that a majority of those surveyed reported getting an annual eye exam, but 86 percent of those who have (or are at-risk for) eye disease fear losing their vision and do not get an annual eye exam. Most Young Kids Haven’t Had An Eye Exam

A 2009 survey of nearly 1,500 participants—co-sponsored by VSP Vision Care and Prevent Blindness America—indicates that more than one in five 12- to 17-year-olds has difficulty seeing the classroom blackboard, with more than 25 percent complaining of headaches. This is a staggering statistic, but the study provides insight into the issue. Read more
